Tips for Year-Round Lawn Care in Aurora

Tips for Year-Round Lawn Care in Aurora

With our diverse climate that swings from scorching temps in the summer to freezing snowstorms in the winter, and other unique challenges posed by high altitude, maintaining a healthy lawn in Aurora, Colorado, requires a proactive approach and thoughtful maintenance. Lawn care isn't the same in Aurora as it is in Florida, New York, southern California, or heck, even other parts of the state.

As a landscaping company, we here at Lobos Landscape Design know the ins and outs of optimal year-round lawn care that's tailored to our local climate! Let's talk about some of the ways you can help ensure that your lawn stays lovely and lush in the long run.

Understanding Aurora's Climate and Soil Conditions

We live in a semi-arid climate that ranges from hot, dry summers to cold, snowy winters. Because we live at a high altitude, the thin air can also impose more challenges for grass growth up here. These are conditions one has to consider when working to maintain a healthy lawn in the region.

If you are trying to plant grass for a new lawn, consider varieties that are drought-resistant, durable, and able to withstand a high range of temperatures. Some good varieties to consider are Kentucky bluegrass, fescues, and Buffalo grass, which is also a native plant!

Seasonal Lawn Care Tips

We've talked about the general basics, but now let's get into the nitty-gritty: seasonal lawn care tips. There are things you can do to help your lawn thrive in every season of the year- yes, even in the winter.

Spring

Before your lawn really starts growing, make sure it's healthy and ready to do so. Spring is a good time to schedule leaf cleanups to make sure that your lawn has unfettered access to air and sunlight. This is also a good time to aerate and fertilize your lawn to promote good water & nutrient absorption and healthy growth.

Summer

This is when grass grows the most, but it's also when heat and drought can do the most damage. Make sure your lawn is getting the right amount of water, ideally about 1 inch a week (though that exact number can vary depending on the type of grass in your lawn). Keep your eye out for signs of insufficient watering, like brown or dry patches.

Of course, because your lawn is growing so much, lawn mowing is important to stay on top of during the summer. Whether you're doing it yourself or hiring a landscaping company, regularity is key. Ideally, you should try to aim for lawn mowing once every 1-2 weeks. Cut the grass to the recommended height for your grass variety, and avoid cutting it too close, as that can stress the grass and make it more susceptible to drought.

Autumn

As the weather cools and lawn mowing starts to taper off, it's time to start getting your lawn ready for winter. This is another good opportunity to aerate, seed, and fertilize your lawn, letting healthy roots develop over the winter. You should especially overseed if you have cold-season grasses in your lawn, giving extra attention to patchy or bare areas.

Winter

While there's not much you can do for your lawn during the winter, we still recommend removing debris from your lawn as needed to prevent mold and disease during its dormant season. You may also want to consider applying fungicide if you're concerned about snow mold!
